Replacement of control equipment for the excitation system of turbine generators TBB-800-2E

IGNALINA NUCLEAR POWER PLANT (INPP)

Excitation panel SHV-1B-4200-1050 UXL4-2 is intended for modification of independent excitation system STN-670-4200-2UXL4 that powers the turbine generator rotor windings. The purpose of modification was to replace two existing thyristor converters ТВ8-2500/1650, their own control systems SUT-V4, and excitation controller ARV-SDP1 that is operating in STN with an excitation panel.

Thyristor converters, control devices, and control equipment of operating excitation system TG-3,4 had to be replaced at Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant.

The main objectives of this project were as follows: replacement of worn-out equipment of primary excitation system TG-3,4, thyristor converters; improvement of operational reliability of control system and improvement of control by introducing more advanced control diagrams, semiconductors and a method of dual-channel control; and, reduction of time spent on technical maintenance of this equipment. 

AS PART OF THIS PROJECT, THE FOLLOWING WORKS WERE CARRIED OUT:

  • Designing, manufacturing, commissioning, testing, and delivery of a new unit certified by OAO SILOVYE MASHINY for replacement of control equipment for excitation system of turbine generators TBB-800-2E for Unit 2 of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant.
  • A technical design for the replacement of equipment was prepared and submitted.
  • Installation of TG-3,4 excitation panels under supplier's supervision, commissioning, testing, and handover to operation.

This project was unique in that we proposed a modification (upgrade) of the excitation system instead of replacing the entire excitation system or individual blocks of control systems, as was initially proposed by our competitors and the manufacturer of the turbine generator. This led to the reduction of project costs and shorter implementation time.

The technical design for the replacement of equipment was prepared by our subcontractors ООО SPKB PROELEKTRO (specialized design centre PROELEKTRO, Kiev, Ukraine).

Equipment installation under supplier’s supervision, commissioning, testing and handover to operation was carried out by our subcontractors OAO SILOVYE MASHINY (open joint-stock company, St. Petersburg, Russia).
